Joel Gaylord enlisted in the Revolutionary War in 1777 and was a drum major in his regiment. He served with George Washington at the Battle of Monmouth.

Gaylord came to Hudson as part of the original band of seven, inspecting the lands with David Hudson.

He must have been impressed for he returned in 1800 with a relative, Ruth Gaylord, and a party of travelers including Dr. Moses Thompson.

They went by land from Goshen, by way of Nathaniel Norton's in New York State, then over the Great Lakes to Cleveland & down.

Gaylord also made the trip overland, later, to bring pioneers to the new town including his own wife and six children.

Gaylord, therefore, was instrumental in establishing our town.
