George R Smith was born in Homer, New York and married Cynthia Munger, daughter of Theodore Thomas Munger.

Munger was a Congregational minister & advocated the "New Theology." Having moved his family to Homer to attend the Cortland Academy, he next was the reason for the family's move to Hudson to attend WRC in 1846.

​

When Theodore moved the next year to attend Yale, daughter Cynthia & son in law George Smith stayed,

George dying in 1847.
